Physician disability insurance, explained
Early in your career, your ability to earn as a physician is worth more than any house or portfolio. Disability insurance protects it. This guide explains, in plain language, what to buy, when, and what to watch for. We’re not an insurance company and we don’t sell policies — when you’re ready to compare real quotes, we point you to independent, physician-focused brokers.
Why physicians specifically need it
A general “any-occupation” policy only pays if you can’t do any job. For a physician that’s nearly worthless — a surgeon who can no longer operate but could theoretically do something else would collect nothing. You need own-occupation, specialty-specific coverage that pays if you can’t work in your specialty.
The features that actually matter
Look for: a true own-occupation, specialty-specific definition; non-cancelable and guaranteed renewable (the insurer can’t change terms or raise your rate); a future-increase option (raise coverage as your income grows without re-qualifying medically); residual / partial benefits (pays if you can work but at reduced capacity); and a reasonable benefit period (typically to age 65) and elimination period (commonly 90 days).
When to buy: as early as possible
Coverage is cheapest and easiest to qualify for when you’re young and healthy — i.e., as a resident. Waiting until you’re an attending means higher cost and the risk that a new health condition makes you uninsurable or excludes coverage.
Common traps
Buying an “any-occupation” policy to save a little; skipping it in residency and paying far more later; being sold a bundled whole-life “investment” instead of straightforward coverage; and buying from a captive agent who can only sell one company’s product. An independent broker who shops multiple physician-friendly carriers is almost always the better path.
How to get quotes
We recommend comparing through an independent, physician-focused broker rather than a single carrier, so you see options across multiple specialty-specific insurers.
